Conditions we treat

Depression

Depression can feel heavy, isolating and exhausting. If you feel numb, overwhelmed, or unsure whether anything can change, that experience is recognised and it is treatable.

Understanding it

What is depression?

Depression is a mood disorder. It causes persistent sadness and loss of interest in activities you would normally enjoy.

Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you think, feel and behave, and can produce both emotional and physical symptoms.

Recognising it

Signs and symptoms

You do not need to recognise all of these, and you do not need to be at your worst before seeking care.

  • Persistent low, empty or irritable mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities
  • Changes in sleep — sleeping far more or far less than usual
  • Changes in appetite or weight
  • Fatigue that rest does not resolve
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness or guilt
  • Headaches, or aches and pains without a clear cause

Conditions that often occur alongside depression

Depression frequently occurs together with anxiety, insomnia or ADHD, and can be affected by physical health conditions. A comprehensive evaluation looks for these rather than assuming a single cause.

Our approach

How we approach depression

Care is personalised. What follows describes the approaches available — what applies to you is decided with your clinician.

  1. A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation covering physical, developmental, emotional, cognitive and social factors

  2. Psychological counselling

  3. Medication management where clinically appropriate, with ongoing review

  4. Practical supports and coordination with other clinicians involved in your care

Common questions

Depression, answered

Do I need to be at my worst before seeking care?

No. Care is appropriate at any point, and earlier is generally easier than later.

Is medication always recommended?

No. Treatment may involve counselling, medication, practical supports, or a combination. What is appropriate is discussed with you.

Can depression be treated over telehealth?

Yes. Evaluation and ongoing care are available by secure video as well as in person.
